This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the original. Due to its age, it may contain imperfections such as marks, notations, marginalia and flawed pages. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions that are true to the original work.

The Quickening Francis Lynde E M Ashe 9781163652428 Books

This book could probably not be written today because the principle struggle of the hero is not taken seriously now. But there is much more story than just a man in conflict with himself. There is conflict with society, with business associates and with plans made for him that he tries to live up to. The setting is apparently northwest GA though it is never specified as such. This book is a delight at large and small scale. I even found the word "ruth" used as a noun. I had never seen that in many years of reading.

The Quickening Francis Lynde E M Ashe 9781163652428 Books Reviews

Francis has went an did it again . This is another marvel story line an character's that are superb ,with all the suspense to keep you as a reader glued to the best there is in literature. You will think that the start of the book is not worth staying with it ,take my word for it you will love the meat of the story.
This story reflects the steel industry in the early 20th century as it is seen through the eyes of a small town that has a steel producing plant. There is a love story in it but not written in the modern way. Lynde is writing in the early 1900s; this story was copyrighted in 1906 so the style reflects this. There is no romance as we know it, no kissing or jumping into bed. If you are addicted to reading hot sex stories then look elsewhere as this book, or any of his other books, will not tell that. The relationship between men and women is very genteel and polite, more like Jane Austen than a modern romance novel.
This story has a strong Christian religious theme running through it as can be seen by the chapter titles. It is about a man who believes strongly in the Christian beliefs when young but when he goes through college he loses that and becomes a hardcore cynic and atheist. Over time, and the vicissitudes of life he returns to his earlier beliefs.
I have read most of this author's works and some several times. I especially like the railroad stories which tell of the problems and politics during the teens and early '20s. I'm just sorry I can't find any more.
